I have heard this question a few times, and wanted to share my thoughts in this post.
So here we go: I think listening to an audio book is the same as reading a paper book or an eBook; it is just a different experience.
Here are 3 reasons why:
- We are consuming the same information
We read to learn something new, increase our knowledge of a specific topic or subject matter, or enjoy ourselves. So the end goal is information consumption. And if that’s the case, does it matter what method we use?
Today, there are three main ways we can consume a book: paper, audio or eBooks. See my previous post here on the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Whether you read a paper book or the audio version of the same book, you are consuming the same information.
- Some books are easier to understand and more enjoyable on audio
I think some books are just better in audio. A good example is Born A Crime by Trevor Noah. I don’t think I would have had the same experience with the paper or electronic version of the book. Trevor Noah narrating, with the accent and the emotions, makes it more enjoyable.
So, one method could be better compared to the others depending on the type of book we are consuming,
I used to think that I could do audio for non-fiction books only; Listening to Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie proved that I was wrong – It is a long fiction book ( a little over 17 hours), but I enjoyed every minute of the story.
Also, I did not want to end up spending 2 months trying to finish the paper version, as quiet time is currently a luxury for me (Thanks to my children).
Listening to this book was the best option for me. And this brings me to my third point.
- Reading is more accessible with audio books
With our busy schedules, we don’t always have time to sit and read a book. So we should take advantage and incorporate reading with other activities whenever possible. Audio books give us that option.
I listen to books while cooking, folding laundry, working out, driving or during my commute.
My best time to listen to a book is while grocery shopping or folding laundry. I feel productive: I’m getting things done while also consuming a book.
What about you? Do you think audio books are considered reading? Share your thoughts in the comments.
Until next time,
