A couple of years ago, this question was not even relevant. We only had one option: paper books. Fast forward to a few years later, and there are so many options. We no longer have a reason to not read. So how do you like your books? Are you more paper, eBooks or audio books?
I personally still lean more towards paper. But I realize that there are pros and cons to each type.
Paper Books
Pros
I don’t know about you, but feeling the pages of the book I’m reading makes the process even more exciting. Plus who does not like the smell of paper? 😊 In all seriousness though, I like flipping pages, highlighting things I want to come back to. And most importantly, I just love having a bookshelf filled with books in my house.
In addition, some studies suggest that reading on paper may boost retention. Furthermore, reading on paper is a great way to prepare for a good night of sleep. If you have any sleep problems or eye strain, the last thing you want to do is read on an electronic device; especially at bedtime.
Cons
Paper books tend to be more expensive, so we have to be smart with how we acquire them. See my article here on ways to avoid overspending on books. In addition, carrying paper books around can be a little cumbersome compared to having a eBook or an audio book on your device.
It is still my favorite way to read though.
eBooks
Pros
Some of us love reading everything on a screen. Plus with eBooks, you have access to all your books on one single device. This prevents you from having multiple books taking up space in your house. In fact, eBooks are great for travelers and those who always want a choice of reading material. In addition, eBooks give you the option to adjust the font size and space lines, which definitely makes reading easier. As a matter of fact, this makes eBooks a great option for individuals with poor eyesight or reading disorders (e.g., dyslexia).
Cons
We already spend so much time on electronic devices (i.e., phone, computers) that adding eBooks might not be too good for our eyes. As mentioned above, reading eBooks, especially at bedtime, can make it hard for us to fall asleep.
Audio books
Pros
They can go with you anywhere. Whether you are exercising, grocery shopping, driving, etc., you can be listening to an audio book. It is definitely a great way to go through books faster. In addition, audio books tend to be cheaper than paper or electronic; a way to save money on books!
They are also environment-friendly as no paper or ink is involved. Besides, after a long day working in front of a computer and reading tons of documents, audio books are a great way to give our eyes a break. And finally, depending on the type of book (i.e., fiction, non-fiction, self-help, etc.) this might be a good option. I found them particularly good for some personal development and autobiography books – especially when the author is narrating the book.
Cons
I find it easy to get distracted while listening to an audio book. We just have so much going on on our devices that a text or an email coming through can easily distract us. Social media can also distract us while we are listening to a book, especially if we receive notifications. I know I sometimes have to pause or listen to the same chapter a couple of times due to distractions.
Another con of audio books is the fact that you cannot highlight and/or make notes to come back to something.
As we can see, there are pros and cons to all the 3 book options. As such, I think it always comes down to what each individual’s preference is. For me it is paper books first, then audio books. Not so much eBooks.
How do you like reading your books? Feel free to let me know in the comments.
Until next time…
